Success in Sport is dependent on a number of elements including innate ability, training and physiology. But the most important factor contributing to successful performance is Sports Nutrition. Whether you’re a weekend runner, playing for the local GAA club or Cycling for Ireland you will enhance your performance, reduce recovery time, decrease injury risk and prevent burnout with a personalised Sports Nutrition plan.
It is well documented in research that good nutrition not only helps prevent disease but also enhances performance. When physical activity increases so does the demand for macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins & fats) in varying amounts, depending on the sport. Often times the macronutrients become the main focus and people forget about the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and flavonoids which are equally important as they act as substrates for energy production and also aid recovery. It is therefore important to ensure that the diet meets those calorie and nutrient requirements. Exercise in general is a stress on the body, in particular endurance exercise (ironmans, marathon running, cycling, triathlons etc) compared to power sports (sprinting, throwing, weightlifting) so the
body’s requirement for nutrients involved in stress hormone production (cortisol) also increases therefore it is essential to nourish the adrenal glands to prevent burn out as well as supporting digestion and immunity. A Sports Nutrition plan will ensure that all of these important systems are well nourished as you embark on your sporting journey.
Your Personalised Sports Nutrition Plan
When designing your Sports Nutrition plan, Anne uses professional dietary analysis software with a comprehensive holistic approach to suit each athlete. This unique approach helps you decrease recovery time, reduce injury and illness, prevent burnout and enhance your performance. Anne’s extensive personal sporting resume combined with her fitness training qualification helps her navigate and understand the nutritional requirements of each athlete. Anne also works closely with the athletes coaches, personal trainers and physiotherapists to optimise the nutritional protocol.
How do I get started?
Anne will email you a Sports Nutrition questionnaire and get you booked in for your consultation. You then return the completed questionnaire prior to the consultation which should include a 3 day food diary and your training programme. You will then have an hour long private consultation with Anne to gather more information, summarise your Sports Nutrition goals, talk through training times, food likes and dislikes, meal suggestions etc. To ensure calorie accuracy in your plan, Anne will also carry out a few simple tests such as body fat%, weight and measurements.
Anne will then design a personalised food plan around your training, competition/race/event and rest days. This will include peri nutrition which refers to the foods and drinks you consume before, during and after training/event. Your Sports Nutrition plan will also include nutrient timing which explains how many hours ahead of training/event to eat snacks or main meals, what to eat/drink during training/event and what times to have recovery drink and meal. Guidelines on safe and effective use of ergogenic aids will also be highlighted (if recommended).
Anne only uses the highest quality approved sports supplements which are tested by Informed Sport. Informed Sport is a quality assurance programme for sports nutrition products, suppliers of raw material to the sports nutrition industry, and supplement manufacturing facilities that tests for substances in sports banned by WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency).
